A case created for the Parisian perfume company, L.T. Piver. René Lalique is known for creating various jewelry and glass works using motifs such as plants, insects, and women. The lid of this case features a prominent decoration with a scarab pattern. In ancient Egypt, the scarab beetle (dung beetle) was associated with the god who moved the sun, because of its behavior of rolling a spherical ball, and thus symbolized rebirth, resurrection, and creation. At the time, scarabs were a common motif for amulets and decorative items, with reverence for ancient Egypt readily apparent in this design.
