In Europe, a host signaled their social status through hospitality using sophisticated tableware and cutlery. From the 1920s, Lalique streamlined his manufacturing processes and focused on the mass production of tableware, including glasses, plates, candelabra, and knife rests. This piece features a monogram of “CGT,” the initials of the French Line (Compagnie Générale Transatlantique), on the stem. It is believed to have been produced for the luxury liners Île de France (commissioned in 1927) or Normandie (commissioned in 1935), which Lalique was involved in designing. It features a characteristic thick base for use at sea, where greater stability is necessary.
