一列に並ぶ3羽のペンギンを表した陶彫で、デンマーク出身の彫刻家テオドール・マドセンによりデザインされ、ロイヤル・コペンハーゲン窯で制作された。くちばしを上方に向けて並ぶペンギンたちの姿が愛らしい。 本作は、朝香宮鳩彦王・允子妃が1920年代に滞欧した際に入手し、日本に持ち帰ったもの。朝香宮邸竣工年に撮影された小客室の写真にこのペンギンたちの姿がみられる。また、朝香宮夫妻の帰国後に製作されたであろう収納箱には「丁抹國製陶器　三羽揃ペリカン」との文字が墨で書かれている。当時、ペンギンはその存在が一般には知られておらず、長いくちばしなどの特徴から既知の鳥の名が記されたと推測される。

A ceramic sculpture of three penguins in a row, designed by the Danish sculptor Theodor Madsen and produced by the Royal Copenhagen factory. The penguins lined up with their beaks pointed upward have a charming appearance. The piece was acquired by Prince Yasuhiko and Princess Nobuko during their stay in Europe in the 1920s and brought back to Japan. These penguins are visible in a photograph of the Small Drawing Room taken in the year the Prince Asaka Residence was completed. The storage box, likely made after the couple’s return to Japan, is labeled in ink with the text “Danish-made ceramics, set of three pelicans” (丁抹國製陶器 三羽揃ペリカン). At the time, penguins were not commonly known, and the name of a familiar bird was likely used based on characteristics such as the long beaks.
