作者の安田侃は1945年に北海道美唄市に生まれ、東京藝術大学大学院を修了後、イタリアで彫刻を学んだ。ピエトラサンタにアトリエを構え、約50年間そこを拠点に制作している。本作は、2001年に当館で開催された「安田侃野外彫刻展」に出品されたもの。イタリア産の白い大理石で制作された本作の中央部には、前後を見通すことができる大きな円形の穴が開いており、庭園の緑を借景として取り込んでいる。ざらついた質感をもつ部分や、スリット状の穴が開いた部分もあり、さまざまな「風」のかたちを想起させる造形である。天候や時刻によってさまざまに表情を変えながら、庭園を訪れる者に四季を通じて親しまれている。

Artist Kan Yasuda was born in Bibai, Hokkaido in 1945. After completing graduate studies at Tokyo University of the Arts, he studied sculpture in Italy. His workshop is located in Pietrasanta, where he has been based for around 50 years. This work was exhibited as part of the “KAN YASUDA Sculptures at the Teien” Exhibition held at this museum in 2001. Carved from white Italian marble, the center features a large circular hole that one can look through, incorporating the greenery of the garden as borrowed scenery. With rough texture in some areas, and featuring slit-like holes, the form evokes various types of wind (kaze). Shifting in appearance with the weather and time of day, this work is appreciated by visitors to the garden in all seasons.
