朝香宮邸の室内装飾に関わったマックス・アングランによる油彩画。木々や植物、遠景に城郭の見える風景に6人の人物が配され、画面左下には“Max Ingrand”の署名がある。やや引き伸ばされたプロポーションによる人物表現は、古代ギリシャ彫刻など古典的な造形を参照しており、このような古典回帰の傾向はアール・デコ期の特徴の一つと言えるだろう。作品サイズや、公私ともにパートナーであったポールと1930年代に手がけた他の室内装飾との類似から、本作も装飾のための壁画と考えられる。

An oil painting by Max Ingrand, who was involved in the interior decoration of the Prince Asaka Residence. Six figures are located within a landscape of trees, plants, and a distant castle; the signature “Max Ingrand” is visible in the lower left corner. The depiction of the figures in slightly elongated form is influenced by classical forms such as ancient Greek sculpture. This style reflects the “return to order” trend that was a characteristic of the Art Deco period. Based on its size and similarities to other interior decorations Ingrand worked on in the 1930s with his professional and personal partner, Paule, this work is also considered a mural intended for decoration.
