動物彫刻はエドゥアール=マルセル・サンドが、その活動初期から手がけてきたテーマの一つである。初めは身近な動物をモチーフとすることが多かったが、次第に彼の情熱はネコ科の猛獣に向けられるようになり、アトリエでは「コンカ」と「イヒ」と名付けられた2匹のチーターを飼っていた。 本作は、チーターと同じく彼が複数回モチーフとした豹の全身をとらえている。くつろいだように座りながらも、前に向けられた顔からは猛獣としての迫力が感じられる。写実的で量感がありながらも、単純化されたフォルムをあわせもつ、サンドらしい様式化された表現がなされている。

Animal sculpture was one of the subjects Édouard-Marcel Sandoz pursued from the beginning of his career. In his early years, he often used familiar animals as motifs. But as his passion gradually turned toward large felines, he eventually kept two cheetahs named Konka and Ihi in his studio. This sculpture depicts the full body of a leopard, a motif he used numerous times, alongside the cheetah. Though sitting in a relaxed posture, the forward-facing head conveys the power of a wild beast. It features Sandoz’s signature stylized expression—realistic and voluminous yet possessing simplified form.
