The teahouse “Kōka” stands quietly amidst the trees of the Japanese garden. Although it is rather understated compared to the Art Deco main building and is often overlooked, it is a fascinating structure that offers a glimpse into the tastes of its client, Prince Asaka. Whilst much remained unclear until recently, various details have come to light through recent research. Drawing on the findings of this research, this exhibition presents the background to the construction of the Kōka teahouse, the building’s characteristics, the Prince Asaka family’s connection to the tea ceremony, and its use as an art museum. We hope that this exhibition will encourage visitors to take a closer look at Kōka, a fine example of Sukiya-style that stands in stark contrast to the Art Deco main building.
