Rei Naito: the emotion of belief

Rei Naito: the emotion of belief

Saturday, November 22 – Thursday, December 25, 2014
Venue: Gallery 1, Annex + Main building

"Is to exist on this earth itself a blessing?" is the question that contemporary artist Rei Naito continues to explore in this solo exhibition. Naito's works are quiet in the extreme. Their volume is minimal, their use of color truly subtle. But they breathe life into the spaces in which they are displayed, and they compel us to come to grips emotionally with this world in which we exist, but of which we are barely aware.
In this exhibition, we first encounter Naito's works in the Former Prince Asaka Residence, where we sense the layering of time and the presence of former lives. Then we see her latest sculptures and paintings in the new white cube galleries of the Annex. We recognize and come to believe that "seeing" takes many forms. We look, and the works at which we gaze quietly look back at us.
