Descriptions

Édouard Bénédictus was known for the diversity of his artistic pursuits as a painter, textile designer, chemist, and composer throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. His designs were used in the interior decoration of the French Embassy Pavilion at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris (also known as the Art Deco Expo). He also designed the wall and curtain textiles for the Prince’s Sitting Room in the Prince Asaka Residence. This is the earliest of his three decorative design collections, consisting of 20 plates vibrantly hand-colored by the printmaker Jean Saudé. All designs are based on plant motifs and characterized by the use of organic curves.
