Created for a room in the Former Residence of Prince Asaka, this exquisite work is reminiscent of a tiny dollhouse. By likening jewelry boxes and small cases to actual furniture, adding a chandelier made of accessories, and taking inspiration from the wallpaper once used in the building, the residence’s decorative elements are deliberately integrated into a miniature collection resembling a small room. Akiko and Masako Takada (born 1978) are identical twins who work together as an artist unit, challenging our perception of the world by transforming everyday objects into different scales and contexts. In this work, they overlay another small room into the charming space of the Young Princess’s Sitting Room in the Former Residence of Prince Asaka, evoking the presence of the bygone resident, and filling a dormant space with new light and narrative.
