Matsui Photo Studio was established by Matsui Kōka on the site of Lafcadio Hearn’s former residence in what is now Shinjuku Ward. When photographing the interiors of buildings, Matsui achieved beautiful results by using a magnesium simultaneous-ignition device of his own creation (a flash bulb, the precursor to modern flash functions that was used until the advent of the strobe light). These photographs were taken by Matsui Photo Studio upon the completion of the Prince Asaka Residence. The images show the Main Gate, East Exterior View, Part of the Inner Courtyard, North Exterior View, and Smoking Room as they appeared at the time.
